◈ About the Department

“I got into economics because I wanted to make things better for the average person.” Ben Bernanke Economics is often called the study of how to resolve scarcity so as to best satisfy our wants and needs — how to allocate scarce resources, such as money, natural resources, our time, or our energy, among their many competing uses. That's the subject of economics. Perhaps more important, though, is that economics is a way of thinking. The most important thing you'll get from studying economics is that you'll learn to "think like an economist" — developing skill at identifying the essential elements of a problem, and developing the analytical skills for finding solutions. This economic way of thinking and analyzing can be applied to a remarkable range of problems, in many different fields: how to make good individual decisions and good business decisions; how to take account of strategic considerations; how to explain human behaviour (and even animal behaviour!); how to address public policy issues such as unemployment, inflation, pollution, and international trade and politics. Over the years Economics as a subject has evolved a lot. The thrust area has shifted to analytical economics from the theoretical economics. “Data is the new oil”-Economics may be the key to extract the oil. New ways are always being discovered to apply the economic way of thinking: to marriage, divorce, and fertility; to intellectual property and the Internet; to the ecological balance of nature; to just about anything people, animals, firms, and governments do. Consequently, studying economics will give superb preparation for many careers in business, law, government, education, and consulting. Masters in economics are sought by financial institutions, by consulting firms, by government agencies, by law schools and business schools, and by business firms of all kinds and all sizes. Kabi Jagadram Roy Government General Degree College is among the very few newly built colleges which offer Honours in Economics (B.Sc.).Along with this, Programme course in Economics is also offered. The Department has three sanctioned teaching posts with two Assistant Professors presently serving the Department. The department does not have a huge student strength but they covered up with quality. One passed out student have completed M.Sc. from Sidho Kanho Birsa Munda University and placed in Bandhan Bank at Sr. Officer grade. Another student is pursuing M.Sc. from Calcutta University. Another student is working as an independent financial advisor after passing out from the department. A student from the final year batch has cleared the written examination for the prestigious Combined Defence Service Exam under UPSC. Currently he is attending the interview. The students have a good relationship with the teachers and the teachers interact with them beyond class hours. The teachers try to inculcate research orientation among the students and encourage them to undertake projects in various socio-economic fields.
