Kabi Jagadram Roy Government General Degree College (Lat: 23.57736°N; Long: 87.10085°E), a sole public-funded co-education institution, was set up in 2015 by the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal. The college campus spreads over 5.42 acres of land and is located beside the NH-14 (NH-60, old numbering) at Shyamapur village (J. L. No: 08) in the Gopalpur Mouza of Mejia block in the district of Bankura, West Bengal. The college was a gift of the enthusiasm and dedication of the local people of the area who had truly understood the necessity of higher education in such rural areas of Bengal. From its very inception, its primary aim has been to provide quality education to the local needy and meritorious students of the neighbouring areas. The college offers B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com. (Honours/Major and Programme) undergraduate (UG) courses in 09 disciplines, namely, Bengali, Commerce, Economics, English, Geology, History, Mathematics, Philosophy and Physics. In spite of several constraints, the institution constantly endeavours to carry forward the legacy of good and sincere education for its students, many of whom basically belong to the socio-economically disadvantaged groups of the society. The college gives equal importance to every student irrespective of their sex, caste, merit and means.
The college began its journey as Government General Degree College at Mejia (Gopalpur)’ with an affiliation to the University of Burdwan to offer 3-year undergraduate (UG) courses in (1+1+1) pattern and since 1st of January, 2017, it is permanently affiliated to the Bankura University with introduction of the 06-semester UG courses under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The NEP-2020 based new undergraduate course curriculum has been introduced from A. Y. 2023-2024. On 25th May, 2017, with the approval of the Cabinet, Government of West Bengal, the college is renamed as Kabi Jagadram Roy Government General Degree College after Late Jagadram Roy who was a 18th century poet and writer of the Ramayana known as Advuta Ramayana in Bengali language, and a resident of a nearby village, Bhului (Lat: 23.5817°N; Long: 87.0655°E).
