Kabi Jagadram Roy Government General Degree College believes ‘Women Empowerment begins with individual Health and Hygiene’. In Indian subcontinent where a considerable percentage of human population thrive below the poverty line (6.7% of 1.2 billion in 2021, United Nations MDG Programme), it is expected that the primary focus of household would be on procuring basic meals or managing roof over head; the secondary areas of attention perhaps would be the children’s education to ensure future avenues of earnings. Personal health and hygiene would be the last priority for the woman of the house of these have-nots in their day-to-day life. We admit this unfortunate reality. Our college critically acknowledges the need of personal health and hygiene of women in rural areas. In this regard, Kabi Jagadram Roy Government General Degree College took initiative to undertake an outreach social programme entitled “SUCHETANA” related to women health and hygiene in nearby Gopalpur village, Mejia Block.
The goal of this outreach endeavor is, in absence of NSS unit in our college at present, our faculty members along with a group of enthusiastic students (boys and girls) will visit monthly/bimonthly to the nearby tribal village and will meet the women to discuss about their health, hygiene and malnutrition related problems, and probable solutions. With a focus on empowering neighboring community “SUCHETANA” aims to fetch positive amend, and to endorse a culture of wellness and dignity in the women’s livelihood.
It is our immense pleasure that on the significant juncture of ‘International Day of Action for Women’s Health’ & ‘Menstruation Hygiene Day (MHD)’ we officially inaugurated “SUCHETANA” on 28th May, 2024. On the eve of this occasion, an awareness programme was organized by the faculty members of “SUCHETANA” for the students, teachers, and non-teaching staff of our college under the direction of Dr. Kastuturi Roy, Medical Officer and Mrs. Sanghati Dasgupta, Lady Councilor (RKSK), BPHC, Mejia; which was followed by our visit to Gopalpur village. We discussed with the adolescent girls and their mothers regarding their health and hygiene related lifestyle. Sanitary products were distributed for creating awareness concerning their menstrual hygiene. We are hopeful to carry forward our outreach activities towards spreading awareness and aid women of neighboring community in health & hygiene related issues- breast cancer, cervical cancer, pregnancy related malnutrition etc.
