জগদ্রাম রায় মধ্যযুগের বাংলা সাহিত্য ও সংস্কৃতির অন্যতম সাধক কবি ছিলেন। পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঁকুড়া জেলার মেজিয়া ব্লকের অন্তর্গত ভুলুই গ্রামে আনুমানিক ১৭২৫ খ্রিস্টাব্দে কবি জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। সাধারণত সপ্তকান্ড রামায়ণ প্রচলিত থাকলেও তিনি অষ্টম কান্ড সম্বলিত “অদ্ভুত রামায়ণ” রচনা করেন, যা “জগদ্রামী রামায়ণ” রূপে খ্যাত। অষ্টম কান্ডে এই রামায়ণের বিশেষত্ব হল সীতা দেবী দুর্গারূপে মহিষাসুর রূপী রাবণকে বধ করছেন। তাছাড়া “দুর্গা-পঞ্চরাত্রি”, “আত্মবোধ” প্রভৃতি গ্রন্থেরও রচয়িতা তিনি। উল্লেখ্য ১৭৪৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দে কবি দেবী দুর্গাকে অষ্ট নায়িকা দেবী দুর্গা রূপে পূজা করেন, যা আজও ভুলুই গ্রামে বিখ্যাত। ২০১৫ সালে আমাদের মহাবিদ্যালয়ের পঠন-পাঠন শুরু হলেও ২৫ মে ২০১৭ সালে মহাবিদ্যালয়ের নামকরণ হয় কবি জগদ্রাম রায় গভ: জেনারেল ডিগ্রি কলেজ।
Jagadram Roy was one of the Poets of Medieval Bengali Literature and Culture. The poet was born in about 1725 AD in Bhului village under Mejia block of Bankura district of West Bengal. Although the “Saptakanda Ramayana” is commonly used, he composed the “Adbhuta Ramayana” with an eighth stanza (Astamkanda) popularly known as the “Jagadrami Ramayana”. The special feature of this Ramayana in the eighth stanza (Astamkanda) is Sita in the form of Durga slaying Ravana in the form of Mahishasur. Moreover, He is the author of books like “Durga-Pancharatri”, “Atma Bodh” etc. It is noted that in 1743 AD Poet Devi Durga was worshiped as Ashta Nayika Devi Durga, which is still famous in the village of Bhului. Our college was started in 2015 but on 25 May 2017 the college was renamed Kabi Jagadram Roy Govt: General Degree College.
