◈ About the Department

The Undergraduate (UG) Department of Geology started its journey since the establishment of the college in 2015 under the University of Burdwan. Since 1st January 2017, it is affiliated to the Bankura University, and following 3-year (6-Semesters) CBCS syllabus. From the Academic Year 2023-2024, the department has introduced the ‘National Education Policy-based (NEP, 2020) New Curriculum and Credit Framework for 4-Year (8 Semesters) UG (Geology) Programmes’ with a view to enhance the ability and to develop the skill for the better employability of the students. At present the total intake capacity is 35 students at Semester-I. It is the only department, where geology is taught at the UG-level under the Bankura University and the university does not have any parallel Post Graduate (PG) programme. Being located in the heart of Raniganj Coalfield, and geologically sited within the Chhotanagpur Gneissic Complex also surrounded by the rocks of Gondwana Super Group, the college provides an ideal setting for the teaching and learning of geology. For skill development through geological field training, the students get good exposures of varieties of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks with associated primary and secondary structures within 4-5 km of the college campus. Many open cast coal mines are also located nearby. There is excellent scope of study of modern sediments and associated sedimentary structures within the recent riverine sediments of the River Damodar, which flows in the vicinity of the college. The department has well-equipped laboratories, virtual classroom facility, computer laboratory with internet facility, seminar library and a museum with a very rich collection of rare and spectacular specimens. In the final University Examination (2022-2023), 100% students secured CGPA >8.50 out of 10.00 (the highest CGPA being 9.26). The performance of the students in National- and State-level Examination might also be considered satisfactory. Majority of the graduated students progressed to higher education in different state and national institutions. Most of the students are placed in different companies/organizations in Government and private sectors. The scientific output in terms of quantity and quality of scientific publications by the faculty members is very significant.

2. Sedimentology Lab
3. Paleontology Lab
4. Rare colletions of rock, mineral and fossil specimens in Geology museum
5. ICT enabled learning system (Smart class room)

◈ Best practices of the Departmnet

1. Mentor Mentee System:
All the students of the department have been divided into small groups and each group has been assigned a teacher, to cater to their needs and solve their difficulties, be it in academics (special care for slow and advance learner separately) or any other aspect (medical, financial, mental health especially for the covid period). This system has ensured smooth and speedy solutions to the problems faced by the students. Students always acknowledge the benefit of menter-mentee system.
2. Open and candid environment:
The relationship between the teachers and the students of the Geology Department is remarkably open and friendly. Students can approach the teachers regarding any of their problems, not only during class hours, but any time of the day. Time spent during the geological field work strengthens the teacher-student bonding. Alumni students are always keep in touch with the teachers. They cherish the beutiful teaher-student relationship.
